To commemorate their jubilee anniversary in 2022, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) will focus on the coming 150 years, i.e. they will look ahead to the long term. BOKU’s research into sustainability, resource management and the preservation and protection of the environment and our quality of life forms the starting point for the program series Elementarereignisse.
This artistic concept of the bb15 curatorial team, which will be realised on the occasion of BOKU’s anniversary year on behalf of BIG ART, revolves around the concepts of disruption, blockage and disaster. Three temporary artistic interventions will be implemented on the university campus. These elementary events are intended to create irritations within everyday structures, thereby generating attention around BOKU’s socially relevant research interests.

Im Jubiläumsjahr 2022 wird die Universität für Bodenkultur ihren Blick vorrangig auf die kommenden 150 Jahre richten, also nachhaltig vorausschauen. Die Forschung der BOKU in den Bereichen Nachhaltigkeit, Ressourcenmanagement sowie Erhalt und Schutz unserer Umwelt und Lebensqualität bildet den inhaltlichen Ausgangspunkt für die Programmreihe Elementarereignisse.
Das künstlerische Konzept des Kurator*innenteams bb15, das anlässlich des Jubiläumsjahres der BOKU im Auftrag von BIG ART realisiert wird, kreist dabei um die Begriffe Störung, Blockade und Desaster. Drei temporäre künstlerische Interventionen werden am Gelände der Universität umgesetzt. Diese Elementarereignisse schaffen Irritation im alltäglichen Gefüge und generieren dadurch Aufmerksamkeit für die gesellschaftlich relevanten Forschungsgebiete der BOKU.

SPERRZEIT
bb15
The Sperrzeit intervention developed by the bb15 team is the connecting element and central theme of their overall concept. It is a mobile sculpture based on the prototype of a so-called Stahlschneebrücke (steel snow barrier) used in avalanche protection. At first glance, this element might seem out of place in urban space. However, whilst being performatively carried through the Türkenschanze Campus, this context provides new meaning to the problem of the fragmented campus and inner-city traffic (the ‘metal avalanche’). These processions cross the streets around the university campus, disrupting the urban space for a moment.
Die Intervention Sperrzeit entwickelt vom bb15 Team ist verbindendes Element und roter Faden des Gesamtkonzepts. Es handelt sich dabei um eine mobile Skulptur, basierend auf dem Prototyp einer sogenannten Stahlschneebrücke aus dem Lawinenschutz. Im urbanen Raum wirkt dieses Element auf den ersten Blick deplatziert, verhandelt aber auf einer neuen Bedeutungsebene die Problematik des fragmentierten Campus und des innerstädtischen Verkehrs (der „Blechlawine“). Drei hölzerne Sperrzeit-Skulpturen wechseln im Zuge von wiederkehrenden Trage-Performances ihren Standort am Campus Türkenschanze. Diese Prozessionen überqueren auch die Straßen rund um das Universitätsgelände.

The sound installation CORAL, COLLECTIVO, TECTÓNICO by the Chilean artist Constanza Alarcón Tennen is based on personal, auditory memories of earthquakes and their effects. It is an ongoing sound archive of sound recordings made by people using their own voices to reproduce the sound of an earthquake that they themselves experienced. The artist arranges the archive of these recorded voices into a composition and makes it possible to experience it in the public space on campus using a vibrating wooden construction that also functions as a large tactile loudspeaker.

Die Klanginstallation »CORAL, COLLECTIVO, TECTÓNICO« der chilenischen Künstlerin Constanza Alarcón Tennen, basiert auf persönlichen, auditiven Erinnerungen an Erdbeben und deren Auswirkungen. Dabei handelt es sich um ein fortlaufendes Klangarchiv aus Tonaufnahmen von Menschen, die mit ihrer eigenen Stimme den Klang eines selbst erlebten Erdbebens wiedergeben. Das Archiv dieser aufgezeichneten Stimmen wird von der Künstlerin zu einer Komposition arrangiert und im öffentlichen Raum am Campusgelände durch eine vibrierende Holzkonstruktion, die gleichzeitig als großer taktiler Lautsprecher fungiert, erfahrbar gemacht.

CARBON AGE GALLERY
Peter Fritzenwallner (guest artists: Wolfgang Obermair, Marie Reichel)
The Carbon Age Gallery by artist Peter Fritzenwallner is a mobile presentation display for contemporary sculpture, installation and performance. It is a further development of his Daihatsu Rooftop Gallery. The small Japanese car from his original work was converted into a bicycle rickshaw and can now be operated in a climate-neutral way. Transferring artworks both onto the roof of the rickshaw and directly onto the street enables their interaction with urban reality. This mobile display engenders a new, mobile temporality that allows the city and campus to act as a changing context, passing behind the works on display. The artistic works presented on the vehicle are connected to the overall concept and appear at irregular intervals at various BOKU locations. (Gastkünstler: Wolfgang Obermair, Marie Reiche)

Die Carbon Age Gallery des Künstlers Peter Fritzenwallner ist ein mobiles Präsentationsdisplay für zeitgenössische Skulptur, Installation und Performance. Sie ist eine Weiterentwicklung seiner Daihatsu Rooftop Gallery. Der ursprünglich verwendete japanische Kleinwagen wurde zu einer Fahrrad-Rikscha umgebaut und kann nun klimaneutral betrieben werden. Das Transferieren von Kunstwerken auf das Dach der Rikscha und direkt auf die Straße ermöglicht ein Interagieren mit urbaner Realität. Das mobile Display verschafft eine neue Mobilität und Zeitlichkeit, das die Stadt und insbesondere den Campus als veränderlichen Kontext hinter den gezeigten Arbeiten vorbeiziehen lässt. Die auf dem Gefährt präsentierten künstlerischen Arbeiten stehen in Verbindung zum Gesamtkonzept und erscheinen in unregelmäßigen Abständen an den Standorten der BOKU. bb15 is an independent artist-run-space and curatorial collective active in the Linz art scene since 2009. As an open space for artists, bb15 develops exhibitions, performances, and cultural events, fostering experimental approaches. bb15 is involved in international and local collaborations, acting as a platform that supports emerging artists throughout their careers.
BIG ART develops artistic interventions for construction projects belonging to the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG) in dialogue with artists, architects and the users themselves. These interventions aim to enhance places where young people in particular study, work, learn or generally spend a lot of time. The art is incorporated in the construction process as early on as possible, meaning that it evolves with the architecture as it is created, reacts to the location and function of the building in question, and becomes a part of an ensemble. On the occasion of BOKU’s 150th anniversary, BIG ART invited the curator collective bb15 and the artist Folke Köbberling to develop temporary interventions for the campus to see in the anniversary year.

bb15 ist ein unabhängiger artist-run-space und ein Kuratorinnen-Kollektiv, das seit 2009 in der Linzer Kunstszene aktiv ist. Als offener Raum für Künstlerinnen unterstützt bb15 experimentelle Ansätze und entwickelt Ausstellungen, Performances und kulturelle Veranstaltungen. bb15 ist in internationale Kooperationen involviert und fungiert als Plattform, die den Austausch von aufstrebenden internationalen und lokalen Künstlerinnen fördert und sie während ihrer Karriere unterstützt.
BIG ART realisiert im Dialog mit Künstlerinnen, Architektinnen und Nutzerinnen künstlerische Interventionen für Gebäude der Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft. Diese sollen dort stattfinden, wo viele Menschen, studieren, arbeiten, lernen, ein und aus gehen. Die Kunstprojekte von BIG ART gehen dabei immer auf den Ort und dessen Funktion ein und werden Teil eines Ensembles.
Für die BOKU hat BIG ART anlässlich des 150-jährigen Bestehens das Kurator*innen-Kollektiv bb15 und die Künstlerin Folke Köbberling eingeladen, temporäre Interventionen für den Campus zu entwickeln, die das Jubiläumsjahr begleiten.
